Modern People ("we", "our", or "us") operates the Modern People mobile application (the "Service"). This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information when you use our Service.
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide to Us
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your email address and password.
- Profile Information: You provide a username and profile picture (avatar) when setting up your profile.
- Library Content: Information about books and films you add to your library, including titles, ratings, and status (reading, completed, etc.).
1.2 Information We Collect Automatically
- Usage Data: We may collect information about how you access and use the Service, such as the features you use and the time spent in the app.
- Device Information: We may collect information about your mobile device, including device type and operating system version.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for various purposes:
- To provide and maintain the Service
- To enable you to create and manage your library of books and films
- To enable social features, including following other users and viewing their libraries
- To identify mutual recommenders among your network
- To authenticate your account and ensure security
- To improve and optimize the Service
- To send transactional emails (account verification, invitations, security notifications, and other communications required to operate the Service)
- To send optional product update and marketing emails, only where you have consented (see Section 7: Email Communications)
3. Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely using Supabase, a third-party database service provider. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
However, please note that no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
4. Third-Party Services
Our Service uses third-party services to provide enhanced functionality:
- The Movie Database (TMDB): We use TMDB's API to fetch information about films, including titles, descriptions, cast, and images.
- ISBNdb: We use ISBNdb's API to fetch information about books, including titles, authors, descriptions, and cover images.
- Supabase: We use Supabase for authentication, database storage, and file storage (profile pictures).
- Resend: We use Resend to deliver our emails. When you receive emails from us, Resend processes your email address, name, and the categories of email you have consented to receive.

5. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties.
Information Visible to Other Users:
- Your username and profile picture are visible to other users
- Your library content (books and films you've added) is visible to users who follow you
- Your follower and following lists are visible to other users
We may share your information:
- With service providers who help us operate the Service (e.g., Supabase)
- If required by law or to respond to legal process
- To protect the rights, property, or safety of Modern People, our users, or others
6. Your Rights and Choices
You have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Access: You can access your account information at any time through the app's settings.
- Edit: You can update your profile information, including username and profile picture.
- Delete: You can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us.
- Data Portability: You can request a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Email Preferences: You can opt out of marketing and product update emails at any time via the app's Settings or the unsubscribe link in any marketing email. See Section 7 for details.
7. Email Communications
We send two categories of email:
Transactional emails
Required for the Service to function. These include account verification, invitations to join Modern People, security notifications, and similar messages. You cannot opt out of transactional emails while you have an active account, because they are necessary to provide the Service.
Product update and marketing emails
Optional. These include:
- Product Updates: Notifications about new features and meaningful changes to Modern People.
- Marketing: Newsletters, weekly wraps, and other Modern People content.
By default, new accounts are opted in to both categories so we can keep our community of early users informed. You may opt out of either or both categories at any time. We will only send you marketing emails while you remain opted in.
How to opt out
You can change your email preferences at any time:
- From within the app: open Settings and toggle Product Update Emails or Marketing Emails off.
- From any marketing email we send you: click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email.
Opt-out changes take effect immediately. If you opt out and later change your mind, you can re-enable either category from the app's Settings.
8. Children's Privacy
Our Service is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us, and we will delete such information.
9. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and maintained on servers located outside of your state, province, country, or other governmental jurisdiction where data protection laws may differ. By using the Service, you consent to such transfers.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
11. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you the Service. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal information, except where we are required to retain it for legal purposes.
12. No Advertising or Tracking
We do not display advertisements in our Service. We do not use tracking technologies for advertising purposes. We do not sell your data to advertisers or data brokers.
