Privacy Policy

Modern People ("we", "our", or "us") operates the Modern People mobile application (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices available to you when you use the Service.
By using the Service, you acknowledge the practices described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide to Us
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your email address, password, date of birth, and your acceptance of our terms.
- Profile Information: You provide a display name, username, and profile picture (avatar) when setting up your profile.
- Library and Preference Information: We collect the films, television, books, albums, songs, podcasts, and other media you add to your library, together with ratings, listening or viewing status, and related preferences.
- Social and Communication Information: We collect information you create through social features, including follows, direct messages, reactions, recommendations you share, notes attached to recommendations, blocks, and reports. Other users involved in these interactions may receive or retain copies of the information you send them.
- Email Preferences: We store your choices about product update and marketing emails.
1.2 Information We Collect Automatically
- Product Analytics: We collect app launches, screens viewed, feature interactions, search length and result counts, library actions, rating activity, follows, sharing and messaging activity, recommendation interactions, and podcast playback activity. Our analytics implementation does not send search terms, message contents, content titles, email addresses, or profile names to our analytics provider.
- Device and Technical Information: We may collect an app-scoped identifier, device type, operating system and version, app version, timestamps, and diagnostic information needed to operate and secure the Service.
- Notification Information: If you enable push notifications, we collect a device push token and your notification preferences so that we can deliver notifications to you.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for various purposes:
- To provide and maintain the Service
- To enable you to create and manage a library across supported media types
- To enable social features, including following other users, viewing shared activity, messaging, and sharing recommendations
- To generate, rank, and improve content and people recommendations
- To authenticate your account and ensure security
- To understand feature adoption, measure engagement, and improve and optimize the Service
- To deliver notifications you have enabled
- To prevent abuse, enforce our terms, and respond to reports
- To send transactional emails (account verification, invitations, security notifications, and other communications required to operate the Service)
- To send optional product update and marketing emails, only where you have consented (see Section 7: Email Communications)
3. Data Storage and Security
Your account and application data is stored using Supabase, a third-party database service provider. Product analytics data is processed by PostHog Cloud in the United States. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
However, please note that no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
4. Third-Party Services
Our Service uses third-party services to provide enhanced functionality:
- The Movie Database (TMDB): We use TMDB's API to fetch information about films, including titles, descriptions, cast, and images.
- ISBNdb: We use ISBNdb's API to fetch information about books, including titles, authors, descriptions, and cover images.
- MusicBrainz, Apple Music, and Spotify: We use these services to find or link to music metadata and listening destinations.
- Podcast Index and podcast publishers: We use Podcast Index and publisher feeds to provide podcast metadata, search, and playback.
- Supabase: We use Supabase for authentication, database storage, and file storage (profile pictures).
- Resend: We use Resend to deliver our emails. When you receive emails from us, Resend processes your email address, name, and the categories of email you have consented to receive.
- PostHog: We use PostHog Cloud for product analytics. PostHog processes an internal account identifier, product interaction events, and technical information such as device type, operating system, app version, and timestamps. We do not use PostHog for advertising or cross-app tracking, and session replay is not enabled.

5. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties.
Information Visible to Other Users:
- Your username and profile picture are visible to other users
- Your public library activity and ratings may be visible to other users through profiles, feeds, and recommendation features
- Your follower and following lists are visible to other users
- Messages, reactions, and recommendations you send are visible to their recipients
We may share your information:
- With service providers that process information on our behalf to operate and improve the Service
- If required by law or to respond to legal process
- To protect the rights, property, or safety of Modern People, our users, or others
6. Your Rights and Choices
You have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Access: You can access your account information at any time through the app's settings.
- Edit: You can update your profile information, including username and profile picture.
- Delete: You can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us.
- Data Portability: You can request a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Analytics: You may contact us to ask questions about, object to, or request deletion of product analytics associated with your account, subject to applicable law.
- Email Preferences: You can opt out of marketing and product update emails at any time via the app's Settings or the unsubscribe link in any marketing email. See Section 7 for details.
7. Email Communications
We send two categories of email:
Transactional emails
Required for the Service to function. These include account verification, invitations to join Modern People, security notifications, and similar messages. You cannot opt out of transactional emails while you have an active account, because they are necessary to provide the Service.
Product update and marketing emails
Optional. These include:
- Product Updates: Notifications about new features and meaningful changes to Modern People.
- Marketing: Newsletters, weekly wraps, and other Modern People content.
By default, new accounts are opted in to both categories so we can keep our community of early users informed. You may opt out of either or both categories at any time. We will only send you marketing emails while you remain opted in.
How to opt out
You can change your email preferences at any time:
- From within the app: open Settings and toggle Product Update Emails or Marketing Emails off.
- From any marketing email we send you: click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email.
Opt-out changes take effect immediately. If you opt out and later change your mind, you can re-enable either category from the app's Settings.
8. Children's Privacy
Our Service is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us, and we will delete such information.
9. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and maintained on servers outside your state, province, country, or other governmental jurisdiction, including the United States, where data protection laws may differ. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
11. Data Retention
We retain account and application information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. Product analytics data is currently retained for up to 12 months. If you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify associated personal information, including analytics identifiers where applicable, except where retention is reasonably necessary for security, dispute resolution, legal compliance, or enforcement of our agreements.
12. No Advertising or Cross-App Tracking
We do not display third-party advertisements in the Service. We use product analytics to understand and improve Modern People, but we do not use analytics data for targeted advertising, link it with data from other companies' apps or websites for advertising, or share it with data brokers. We do not sell your personal information.
